LCD Drivers with on-chip VLCD generation

The most important parameter to assess the optical performance of a passive monochrome LCD is the display contrast. Assumed an LCD with a certain resolution, a defined LCD multiplex rate and a defined LCD bias configuration, the display contrast depends on the VLCD voltage, also called operating voltage of the display.
 

In summary, to optimize the contrast:
 

  • VLCD must be independent from the VDD supply
  • VLCD must be programmable in a wide range
  • VLCD must be programmable with a small programming step and very accurate
  • VLCD must be compensated over temperature to keep a high and stable contrast over the temperature range

In order to optimize the display contrast while reducing the bill of materials and the overall system cost, NXP has developed a wide portfolio of LCD drivers with an integrated charge pump and regulator to generate the LCD voltage on-chip; this allows programming of the LCD voltage value accurately in a wide range by setting a register through the interface.

Further, NXP has integrated a temperature sensor and an LCD voltage temperature compensation circuitry to compensate the LCD voltage value with the temperature and to reach an optimum contrast over the operating temperature range.
